History of Textiles playlist

Lately I’ve been on a deep dive into the history of textiles. From cotton to silk, to the industrial revolution, to all sorts of different ways that yarns are woven and knit and how that all binds us together as humans kind.

I am excited to share with you a playlist that I’ve been making over the past few months on Spotify that allows you to see a bit deeper into the world that we love as sewists, the world of textiles. Of course you can access these podcasts anywhere you can get podcasts! Haptic and Hue has quickly become one of my favourites as Jo is a nuanced editor and not only asks great questions but spends time providing context to quotes and ideas in time.

I hope you enjoy this journey as well! Please let me know what episode was your favourite and let’s talk fabric in the comments!

Stitching together the fabric of history by History Extra podcast

Chapter 5: The Textile Industry by The Industrial Revolutions

Virginia Postrel on Textiles and the Fabric of Civilization by EconTalk (My next book to read)

Leading experts discuss trade, government policy, and the impact of Covid on cotton, textiles & apparelpe of textiles today, very interesting!)

Paracas Textile Fragment by A History of the World in 100 Objects (This one was suuuper interesting!)

All of Haptic and Hue by Jo Andrews, especially the Comfort episode about Gees Bend

All from the French Whisperer. He has a whole list about textiles and history I haven’t listened to them all yet (they’re bedtime stories essentially, listen at your own risk!) but he’s smart and it’s easy listening and learning.

And special mention to a tertiary episode about English words and expressions that come from textiles

Episode 110: Dyed in the Wool by The History of English podcast
