Level Up - Skills

Level up with some skills classes.

These classes are not for learning how to sew a garment from start to finish; these are the deep dives into the details that make each garment. If you love to learn WHY as well as how, these are the classes for you! Each one is self-contained so you don’t have to worry about scheduling multiple weeks to learn how to nail that skill!

Classes are taught in rotation and often sell out due to my commitment to quality instruction and small class sizes. If I know you and a friend are coming together, I’ll make sure to put your tables together too. Just send me a heads up!

Knits - 2 hrs

For everyone new to knits, or not so new but struggling, this class is for you. You’ll be provided with an indepth booklet (which you can also purchase here), samples of different types of knit fabrics and the techniques to sew them on your own machine. We’ll practice sewing construction and finishing seams on various fabrics, then bind and band a curve (mimicking your neckline or armhole) and then finish with a cuff. You’ll learn about stretch percentage and why you REALLY want to consider what fabric you use for pants.

Serger 101 - 2 hrs

If you’re new to your serger, or just need a refresher on threading, this class is perfect to get you on your feet. A steady moving class that will cover all your basics and leave you ready to set it up at home with confidence. This is a great class to take before the T-Shirt class if you’d like to use your serger to sew your T-Shirt.
What are all the dials? Why doesn’t it chain when I rethread it? Why is it bunching my fabric?
Let’s get you some answers!

Garment Alterations - 2hrs

Sometimes when we buy things in the thrift shops or new in store, they aren't QUITE right. A smidge here, a little bit shorter there would make a world of difference. Learn how to make basic alterations to  your clothing in this workshop aimed at giving you some solid skills for making your wardrobe more YOU!
Please bring 2-3 garments or projects that you'd like advice on how to change to make them fit better!

Measuring & Fitting- 2hsr

If you've made a garment before that just didn't fit properly, or if you get overwhelmed just looking at the back of the envelope or all those charts online, this class is for you. We're going to cover the basics that you need to know BEFORE you start cutting (or tracing) your pattern. Take this class before your Jeans class to nail the fit. Want to know:
How to make common measurements
Where to take them on your specific body
How to translate those measurements into sizes
How to choose the best size to make
How to make those size changes on your pattern

Mending Pants - 1hr

Bring in those pants! You know the ones, with the knee holes, crotch holes or ripped up hems.  If you've been hanging onto those favourite jeans with holes, consider this your sign to learn something new and mend them! This class brings you through instructions on how to mend your pants so you can use them for even longer!
Patches are supplied, and please let me know if you need to use a sewing machine for your repair.

Seam Finishes - 2hrs

Learn how to make garments that are as beautiful on the inside as the outside. If you’re looking to level up your garments, this is a great class that will leave you wondering why you waited so long. Finish your garments professionally without a serger!
You’ll learn how to make bias tape, bind a hem and neckline, how to sew a french seam (like in our Silk Pillowcase Class), how to sew a flat felled seam (looking at you Jeans) and how to sew a bias bound seam (hello, bog coat). You’ll leave with a sample and booklet that you can refer to again and again!

If what you want to learn doesn’t fit into one of these classes, consider a Private Lesson or a BYOP workshop so we can work on your goals!
