Sewing Skills: Zippers

  • St. James Library 1910 Portage Avenue Winnipeg, MB, R3J 0J2 Canada (map)

Are you ready to take another step in your sewing practice by inserting zippers, but you'd like a little primer first?

In this class we’ll be making a small lined zippered pouch, the perfect size for carrying your essentials, stuffing with chocolate as a gift or keeping your items organized in a larger bag. Sometimes just getting your head wrapped around the mechanics of the sewing process of a zipper helps and you'll feel more confident as you start your other projects.

This straightforward technique is the basis of adding a zipper to the side or back of a dress or shirt, or the waistband of a pair of pants.

You’ll learn:

How to use a zipper foot

How to insert a zipper

How to bag a lining on a small pouch

Please bring:

Your machine

A zipper foot

One zipper (7-8 inches)

A half meter of material, quilting cotton is best for learning, but you can take the same idea and make this bag out of canvas, linen, cork etc.
