LEILA WEEKENDER

leila kelleher weekender

There’s currently only one spot left on Sunday, June 16! Click here to claim it for the day and make a dent in your sewing & fitting journey!

Come sew with us!

It’s a one-of-a-kind workshop sewing weekend with the one and only Leila from @leila_sews!

Join us for a chance to get first hand advice from Leila and the ability to connect and enjoy a whole weekend dedicated to your sewing goals! Each morning you’ll have the ability to book Leila for a 30 minute one on one for you to talk fitting, sewing, pattern drafting, whatever floats your boat. After a delicious locally made and catered lunch, Leila will be available during the open sew to answer your questions and provide feedback as you sew/fit. Registration is extremely limited, we only have 5 spots for each day (yes, seriously, prepare to get to know your sewing neighbour). You can choose to come one or both days, and we have a payment plan if you need a bit of breathing room, we get it!

This weekender is not limited to any particular pattern company, come sew whatever your closet needs!

Who’s teaching?

Leila Kelleher (she/her)

Dr Leila Kelleher (she/her) is an Assistant Professor of Fashion Design and Social Justice at Parsons School of Design. Her work intersects fashion and biomechanics, with a specific emphasis on the marginalization of fat and plus sized bodies within the fashion industry. Leila's teaching, research, and professional practice adopt an interdisciplinary, decolonized, and anatomically-based approach, applying biomechanics principles to reshape fashion design and production.   As a co-founder of the Size Inclusion in Fashion Lab at Parsons, Leila actively challenges conventional norms. Her upcoming book, scheduled for release in 2024, focuses on plus-sized patternmaking, offering valuable insights to the field. Currently, her research explores best practices in plus-size patternmaking, grading, and fashion pedagogy. She also leads a project examining the fat fashion experience and co-owns Muna and Broad, a pattern company specializing in plus-size designs.   Leila's research background includes collaborations with Indigenous communities in the Canadian Arctic, biomechanical studies on sporting protective equipment and functional movement, and research on occupational injuries in professional musicians. Holding a PhD in Biomechanics from Western University (Canada) and a Masters in Music Performance from the Eastman School of Music, Leila previously served as a Professor of Health Sciences and Wellness at Humber College in Canada. Her diverse expertise reflects a commitment to inclusivity and innovation in both academia and the fashion industry.

Open Sew & Fitting Day

Each day is a chance to renew your relationship with the clothes in your closet already and those you'd like to sew. Use your 30 minutes of one on one time with Leila to advance whatever goals you may have for your clothing. Altering an existing garment, showing her your previous sew and getting fit advice for your second one, or maybe talking pattern drafting if you're really digging into making your own clothes from scratch.

In the morning, each participant will have a 30 minute block of one-on-one time with Leila to ask their questions, get fitting advice etc. The afternoon will be an open sew. Leila will be around for group advice and helpful tips as you work on your projects.

Time slots will be available on a first come first serve basis, but everyone will have the opportunity to talk to Leila and get her advice on their questions.

We'll all be taking a break for a catered lunch from 12:30-1:00pm.
